Flounder or winter flounder are known commercially as blackback flounder or lemon sole. They are a flatfish
similar to fluke or summer flounder. The most noticeable
difference is that fluke have a large mouth with teeth
to catch and eat bait fish, while flounder have a small
mouth with lips and no teeth to eat marine worms and
tiny shrimp.
They inhabit sandy or muddy bottom in depths
from just a few feet to over 300 feet from Southern New
Jersey to Nova Scotia. Best baits are clams, mussels and
worms.
