| The National Marine Fisheries Service
sets annual quotas for most popular fish species. Up to 3% of the
quota is allocated for research. This research set-aside is
either used directly for research or auctioned off to finance research.
For 2014 the Laura Lee has purchased 10,000 lbs. of RSA
sea bass, porgies and fluke. The NMFS has issued the Laura Lee an "exempted fishery
permit" to harvest RSA. The New York State DEC has issued the
Laura Lee a license to "collect and possess" research set-aside.
These permits allow us to fish for Sea Bass Porgies and Fluke before and after the regular season.
Under these special permits size and bag limits may
differ from those during the regular season.
